Writing to Your MP

When to contact your MP

You can write to your MP about any issue affecting you, your family, or your community. This might be a local matter like poor road maintenance or problems with a nearby development. It could also be a national issue such as healthcare policy, education funding, or environmental legislation.

Your MP can also help with problems involving government departments or public services. If you've had difficulties with benefits claims, immigration applications, or NHS treatment, your MP may be able to make enquiries on your behalf. They'll need your written permission to contact other organisations about your personal circumstances.

MPs can only deal with matters under UK Parliament jurisdiction. Issues under devolved powers should go to your representatives in the Scottish Parliament, Welsh Senedd, or Northern Ireland Assembly. MPs cannot help with private disputes between individuals, court cases, or matters clearly the responsibility of local councils. If you're unsure whether your issue falls within their remit, it's still worth asking.

Finding and contacting your MP

Enter your postcode on the UK Parliament website at parliament.uk to find your MP's name, party, and contact details. Your MP represents the constituency where you're registered to vote, not where you work.

You can send your letter to your MP's constituency office or Westminster address. Many MPs prefer constituency correspondence to go to their local office, where their case workers are based. For Westminster, the address is simply: [MP's name], House of Commons, London SW1A 0AA. You don't need postage for letters sent to MPs at the House of Commons.

Email is often quickest, and most MPs have contact forms or published email addresses on their websites. Some prefer written letters for personal casework. Social media platforms are better for brief messages than detailed cases.

Your situation may be slightly different. ask a question below ↓ and our editorial team will reply with our advice.

Writing your letter

Use "Dear Mr Smith" or "Dear Ms Jones" for most MPs. If your MP holds or previously held a ministerial position, use "Dear Rt Hon Mr Smith" or "Dear Rt Hon Ms Jones".

State clearly why you're writing and what you'd like your MP to do. Be specific about the problem and how it affects you. For local issues, include street names, dates, and names of organisations involved. For national issues, explain why the matter concerns you and what action should be taken.

Keep your tone respectful and factual. MPs are more likely to take up your case if you present it calmly. Avoid personal attacks or inflammatory language. If you want your MP to raise the issue in Parliament, contact a minister, or support specific legislation, say so clearly. For personal matters, explain what you've already tried.

Include your full name and address. MPs only take up issues for constituents, so you need to prove you live in their area. When writing on behalf of someone else, explain your relationship to them.

What to expect

Response times vary depending on workload and complexity. If your MP needs to contact other organisations or government departments, this takes longer. If you haven't heard back after a month, send a polite follow-up.

Your MP may not agree with your view or solve your problem immediately. They might explain why they hold a different position, or outline what steps they're taking. Even if they can't offer the solution you wanted, they should explain what they can and can't do.

Writing to your MP is one of the most direct ways to ensure your voice is heard at a national level. You might also contact your local councillors, join campaign groups, or attend public meetings about issues that matter to you.

@Possible Be aware that MPs generally cannot give personal financial assistance, as they're not a source of grants or loans. Your better route is to approach charities like the Prince's Trust, local enterprise partnerships, or the National Lottery's small business funds, which do support equipment purchases and training top-ups. If you still want to write to your MP, ask them to signpost you to relevant funding schemes in your constituency rather than asking for money directly. Keep the letter brief and explain exactly what the diagnostic machine will let you earn.

My son of 6 yr old has been a happy lovable child, he loves school has lots of friends, invited to birthday parties, however, the last six months the school has started complaining that he won't do his work only wants to play, he needs special education classes, the school have moved him around from class to class and at times sent him to the head teacher to do his work. My son does all his work at home but now doesn't want go to a particular teachers class or go to school. The final straw came when the school said they have received a complaint that my son is a bully and intimidating (they won't say who from or whether it is from the school or from a parent). I feel my son is being victimised and am at my wits end as to what to do next, i am of the opinion they are pushing me to remove him from the school, i have attended meetings at the school with no suitable outcome i.e move to yet another class. Please advise

Good example on the whole. However, you wrote 'curb' instead of 'kerb' (the American version: wouldn't the English version have been more appropriate?). Also, you omitted how to address a knight or dame, of which there are many in the Houses of Parliament.
